“Be quiet!” Evan hissed, lifting the knife back to her throat. She gasped but said no more.

“Come now,” Lord Croydon quickly. “There is no need to hold her hostage. I will do what you ask.”

“How do I know for sure?”

“I want this done as much as you do. But I do not want to see her hurt. I cannot help you, Mr McEwan, if you do not help me.”

Evan didn’t move. He stared at the Earl, gauging the truth in his words. But, after a moment, he realized that there was little he could do but trust him. If he didn’t, then coming here would be for naught.
